Romanian Classics - Nationalism and Patriotism is a work that relies on exposing the two intertwined isms as a result of the same compulsive need to exclude while invoking an intoxicating loyalty to its own abuser - the nation state. This exclusion, disguised as an innocent love for the fatherland and unquestioned devotion to mother-nation, formulates a rejection of the other, simply for both patriotism and nationalism can only exist in absolute solitude. A nationalist and a patriot are by definition xenophobic since their absolute interest is promoting and defending a specific set of values distinctive only to them. Regardless of Orwell's differentiation of the two isms, the fact remains that nationalism and patriotism are fueled with this excessive appreciation of particular national values. The Orwellian classification of the two, one passive, beneficial and defensive, the other aggressive and threatening peace, ignores the fact that arousing patriotism and invoking national pride can only occur in absence of a national self-reflexive critique. Like old European addictions, nationalism and patriotism which confronted with new present day transnational dynamics, reveal the ossified frustrations of the still to overcome tempestuous past. | |||
